Sign up for our weekly newsletters to get only what matters to enterprise AI, data, and security leaders.<\/em> <em>Subscribe Now<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n<\/div><p>After literally years of hype and speculation, <strong>OpenAI has officially launched a new lineup of large language models (LLMs),<\/strong> all different-sized variants of <strong>GPT-5,<\/strong> the long-awaited predecessor to its GPT-4 model from March of 2023, nearly 2.5 years ago.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company is rolling out <strong>four distinct versions of the model<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>GPT-5, GPT-5 Mini, GPT-5 Nano, and GPT-5 Pro<\/strong> \u2014 to meet varying needs for speed, cost, and computational depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>GPT-5<\/strong> is the full-capability reasoning model, used in both ChatGPT and <strong>OpenAI\u2019s application programming interface (API)<\/strong> for high-quality general tasks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GPT-5 Pro<\/strong> is an<strong> enhanced version with extended reasoning and parallel compute<\/strong> at test time, designed for use in complex enterprise and research environments. It provides more detailed and reliable answers, especially in ambiguous or multi-step queries .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GPT-5 Mini<\/strong> is a smaller, faster version of the main model, optimized for lower latency and resource usage. It is used as a fallback when usage limits are reached or when minimal reasoning suffices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GPT-5 Nano<\/strong> is the most lightweight variant, <strong>built for speed and efficiency in high-volume or cost-sensitive applications<\/strong>. As <strong>co-founder and CEO Sam Altman <\/strong>said, flanked by other OpenAI staffers on an embargoed video call with reporters last night, \u201c<strong>the way that most of us define AGI, we\u2019re still missing something quite important <\/strong>\u2014 many things that are quite important, actually \u2014 <strong>but one big one is a model that continuously learns as its deployed, and GPT-5 does not.\u201d  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also asked OpenAI the following question directly: <strong>\u201cIs OpenAI considering\u00a0GPT-5\u00a0AGI? Will it trigger any changes regarding Microsoft negotiations?\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To which an OpenAI spokesperson responded over email: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>GPT-5\u00a0is a significant step toward AGI in that it shows substantial improvements in reasoning and generalization, bringing us closer to systems that can perform a wide range of tasks with human-level capability. However, AGI is still a weakly defined term and means different things to different people.\u00a0<strong>While\u00a0GPT-5\u00a0meets some early criteria for AGI, it doesn\u2019t yet reach the threshold of fully human-level AGI.\u00a0<\/strong>There are still key limitations in areas like persistent memory, autonomy, and adaptability across tasks. The given prompt was only a single paragraph, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <strong>Altman stated: \u201cThis idea of software on demand will be a defining part of the new GPT-5 era.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this basic capability \u2014 prompt to working software \u2014 has been available already from prior OpenAI models such as o3 and o4-mini, o4-high, and rival services like Anthropic\u2019s Claude Artifacts, which I (and many others) have used for many months to create interactive first-person and clickable games as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advantage GPT-5 seems to offer in making games, apps, and other software from prompts seems to be in speed \u2014 it produced this demo app in a matter of mere minutes \u2014 and completeness, with very few discernible bugs and a completely playable experience in \u201cone-shot,\u201d or from a single prompt without back-and-forth conversation, as the developers like to say. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-available-to-chatgpt-free-users-and-all-plans\">Available to ChatGPT free users and all plans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>GPT-5 is not restricted to premium subscribers. OpenAI has made the model available across all ChatGPT tiers, including free users \u2014 a deliberate move aligned with the company\u2019s mission to ensure broad benefits from AI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Free-tier users can access <strong>GPT-5 and GPT-5 Mini<\/strong>, with usage limits \u2014 though exactly what those usage limits are remains undefined for now, and I\u2019d guess will likely change on an irregular cadence depending on demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subscribers to the <strong>ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month) tier<\/strong> receive higher usage allowances, while subscribers to the <strong>ChatGPT Pro ($200 monthly), Team ($30 per month or $240 annually), and Enterprise (variable pricing depending on company size and usage)<\/strong> customers get unlimited or prioritized access. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GPT-5 Pro will become available to<strong> Team, Enterprise, and EDU customers in the coming days.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new unified ChatGPT experience eliminates the need to select a model manually.
